Following a highly successful opening run that drew packed audiences and glowing reviews, the festive musical “In Search of the King” returns to the Celebration Centre this weekend for its second showing on 5, 6 and 7 December 2025.

The Zimbabwean-created production, which blends original music, rich storytelling, and striking stage design, has been widely praised for its artistry and emotional depth.

Audiences from the first weekend have taken to social platforms describing the musical as “world-class,” “breathtaking,” and “a landmark moment for Zimbabwean theatre.”

Producers say many who attended last week’s debut have already booked tickets for a second showing a testament to the impact the musical has made in its opening days.

“We have been humbled by the feedback,” said Event Promoter Lyncolin Kapswara of Events by GEC.

“People are returning because they want to relive the experience with family and friends. That tells us the story and the performances have resonated deeply.”

“We have introduced the $60 for 5 tickets “Festive Bundle” perfect for families, friends, colleagues, churches, schools, or any group wanting to share this experience together,” added Event Promoter Lyncolin Kapswara.

Featuring some of Zimbabwe’s most celebrated voices including Pastor Bonnie Deuschle, Janet Manyowa, Arthur Evans, Walter Tapfumaneyi, and a full ensemble of musicians and choir members the 3,000-seat auditorium has transformed into a festive stage showcasing one of the largest local productions staged in recent years.

Kapswara said the creative team is looking forward to welcoming new audiences as the show enters its second and final weekend.

“This production was created to be shared widely, and we are glad Zimbabwe is embracing it the way it has. If you missed the first run, this is your chance. And if you watched it already, we are ready to welcome you back.”

NaGuG

Songwriter and performer NaGuG has released her new song titled ‘Simuka’ which is a celebration of one’s culture and heritage.

On the project she enlisted the services of prolific industry gurus; multi-award winning Los Angeles-based producer, Pascal Guyon and multi award-winning choreographer, music producer and creative John Cole to direct the video.

Nagug says the song Simuka was based from a personal experience.

“As a diasporan, it is inevitable that after seeing the world, you begin to value your culture, history, and heritage much more,” she said.

Her years away from home helped her under the richness and value contained in the Zimbawe cultures and value system.

“The song Simuka is birthed from this experience. It's me speaking what I have grasped from the spirit of vanhu/Bantu which I have grown to acknowledge and understand better in my years of estrangement from home, over the years. Africa, particularly My Zimbabwe are a proud nation, wealthy in culture and resources, education and much more,” added NaGuG.

The product is vibrant and full of life showing the cooperative work of Zimbabwean young people including, videographers, editors, costume designers/stylists, Dancers, Artists and Dreamers.

She stressed that this was proof our young are competent and professional in execution  of projects and that more opportunities should be outsourced to them to build their experience.

“The video of SIMUKA is amplifying the message of coming together of young people hence I outsourced it to 'young blood' , Zimbabwe's young and vibrant generation to amplify the message SIMUKA. I procured John Cole, known as best Dance choreographer and artist to direct  the project,” said the ZIMA 2022 nominated artist.

NaGuG which is an acronym for Nature, Advantage, Gem, Unique and Uncanny and Grand describes her music as soulful and captivating with lyrical depth, that evoke one's thoughts.

Some of her previous work include ‘Back to the Beginning’ and ‘EarthChild’ which were recorded at HubII studios and premixed by multi Grammy winning British Producer, Simon Gorgerly.

James Manyika now in charge of finding out tech's impact on society for Google (pic: Getty/NYT)

Google has appointed Zimbabwean-American James Manyika, the head of McKinsey Global Institute, to be the company’s first Senior VP of Technology and Society.

The position will report to Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai and focuses on how tech affects society.

“I’m thrilled that James Manyika will be joining Google’s leadership team,” Pichai said in a statement. “He’s spent decades working at the intersection of technology and society and has advised a number of businesses, academic institutions and governments along the way.”

A Google spokesperson said Manyika’s role works on “shaping and sharing” the company’s view on the way tech affects society, the economy and the planet. His areas of focus include the future of work, sustainability and the impact of AI.

Big Tech has long faced accusations that it’s a detriment to society, and Google thinks it can address those criticisms more directly. Manyika will help explore tech’s impact on society and shape the firm’s points of view on subjects including AI, the future of work, sustainability and other areas that could make a significant difference.

Manyika has spent 28 years at McKinsey, which helps companies and governments (including tech leaders) make decisions based on economic and cultural trends like those Google hopes to address. He also serves on the boards of research institutes at Harvard, MIT, Oxford, Stanford and other top-tier schools. If anyone is likely to be aware of tech’s broader effects on the world, it’s him.

Google’s move certainly isn’t surprising. It comes as the company is facing a host of antitrust lawsuits, increasingly tougher regulations and protests over its treatment of employees. There are also claims Google and Big Tech haven’t done enough to fight misinformation and are eroding privacy. The new executive won’t necessarily adjust all of Google’s behavior, but he could provide a more informed perspective that reduces the chances of a cultural or political backlash. __ Protocol/eGadget

One contestant will stand a chance to walk away with a cash prize of US$50K in the upcoming reality TV show, One House Zimbabwe.

The show is kind of similar to 'Big Brother Africa' reality TV show and will be under personal funding from Taona 'Teemak' Chipunza and Prince 'Styllz' Mudzingwa.

Speaking at a press conference held at Meikles Hotel on Saturday, Teemak said they are introducing One House Zimbabwe where people especially especially the youths, aged between 21-30 are eligible to participate, with a cash prize of US$50k for the winner.

"The person who is going to win will be given an amount of US$50000," he said.

He said it is an opportunity for Zimbabwean youths to showcase their talent and Zimbabweans to celebrate their kin.

"It is time we start appreciating our own... the people outside will be watching this to see who will stand out among the contestants," he said

The reality show will also be a platform to promote culture and all venecular languages will be used to communicate.

Participants from all parts of Zimbabwe will be able to apply if they are aged 21-30, including presenters, hosts and the behind the scenes teams.

Styllz said they are introducing this show in a bid to put the nation on the map.

"So we decided to do something of our own, so we said let's put our country on the map," he said.

"It is not focused on Harare only, we are focused on all parts of Zimbabwe."

The duo dismissed chances of interested sponsors saying they will be doing it on their own.

"We do not have sponsors, it is coming from our own pocket, we are doing it for our country," Styllz said.

They however will invite those in the business sector to strike contracts in partnering with them but reiterated that they have enough money in their pockets to fund the show on their own.

"We do not want sponsors, we don't need help, God has already helped us enough," they said.

The show will be the first of its nature in Zimbabwe and they are in the process of acquiring licences and accessing a channel on DSTV where audiences will be able to watch so they can vote for the participants.

An anonymous venue will be selected for the show and a website is currently being set-up for communication pertaining how to apply and all One House Zimbabwe updates.

Asaph

There is no doubt that the year 2019 was a big year for the hip-hop genre in Zimbabwe.

Zim hip-hop artistes went from topping radio charts to dominating regional music television chart shows.
The year can be remembered as one when Ti Gonzi rose to his prime.
His verse on Ishan’s Kure made him the most sought-after hip-hop artiste in the country and he went on to do more than 25 collaborations throughout.
The rapper attracted new fans who had never been or were not hip-hop fans because of his musical appeal to the average youth in the ghetto.
His collaborations with Zimdancehall acts also cemented his position as one of the best artistes for 2019.
The year 2019 also saw Hillzy, one of the most talented hip-hop and RnB artistes top regional music chart-shows on television channels like Trace Africa and also being playlisted on Channel O.
The Muroora singer also won a top African award (AFRIMMA) for his song, TV Room, which he featured together with super-talented artiste, Garry Mapanzure.
King 98 dropped monster tracks and featured some of the top African artistes like Nigeria’s Davido and South Africa’s Nasty C on his maiden album, Francesca, and his hard work was rewarded through the awards he scooped.
Artistes like Asaph also had their fair share of brilliance when they dropped their projects and won awards.
However, there is one problem that has hindered progress or growth of the hip-hop genre and that is consistency.
Over the years, we have seen hip-hop artistes come and go. Some have topped radio charts and dropped monster tracks that would have made them untouchable, but they have all ended up sinking into oblivion.
Others have come with very promising careers, but after releasing only one hit song, you never hear of them again.
Just like any other genres which lack consistency, Zim hip-hop as a whole lacks consistency from music/video releases, award shows and even the media that push their works seem to lack consistency when it comes to promoting the genre.
We have had “old school” artistes such as Tehn Diamond, Jnr Brown, Tatea Da MC, mUnetsi and Maskiri, who could have changed the game for good, but what did they do?
They got a few airplay slots, signed a few corporate deals and now no one talks about them anymore unless it is a debate on who was or is the greatest MC or whatever they will be ranting about on social media.
New school artistes also seem to have contracted the “lack of consistency” virus from their predecessors.
When Takura came onto the scene, everyone was in awe, and people thought that they had found an artiste who would terrorise Africa because of his versatility, but one year on, people are now starting to enjoy his Instagram posts and stories more than his music.
I am not saying all these artistes are bad, but they are depriving us of the good music that they used to release, and thus they are lacking consistency.
The same also applies to the award shows. We have seen artistes do well throughout 365 days and be nominated for five or so awards, for instance, and you see them walking out with none.
This can also be linked to the issue of consistency among the hip-hop circles or maybe it is the decisions made by the adjudicators.
We have also seen artistes win awards and the next thing, they are nowhere to be found and some of them will be hiding under the “we are doing music for pleasure” and you will start to wonder where the industry is going.
Zim hip-hop bloggers, media and “touts” are also in the mix as they have also failed to properly push the culture.
We have seen some of them come and go as the artistes they will be pushing also fade.
These are people who are supposed to convince everyone that the genre is still alive and kicking, even though sometimes there will be nothing to talk about.
If one cannot be consistent, they can at least stay relevant so that people have something to talk about.
It is not a bad thing to be the most vocal on social media like what others are doing, at least the day you will decide to drop new music people will be quick to notice that you are back in the game.
Music trends are changing every year and our Zim hip-hop artistes should ride that wave, stay relevant, drop new music accompanied by videos, do more live shows, especially with live bands and not use backtracks.
That way, I am sure we will have an industry to talk about.
As the year 2020 starts, I am hoping for an industry in which the artistes compete head to head with their Zimdancehall counterparts.
Bill Gates once said content is king, and as a Zim hip-hop fan, I am urging all Zim hip-hop stakeholders to collaborate, stay relevant and be consistent.
Talk of the inimitable King Pin, born Tonderai Makoni, who left a huge mark on Zimbabwe’s hip-hop way before all these new breeds came onto the scene.
Death snatched him from us, but his works, which include I Salute You and The Inauguration among others, will always be on every hip-hop fan’s lips.
